Slovakia could even earn money due to migrants, Hospodarske Noviny daily reports on pages 1 and 2 on Tuesday.
The Interior Ministers of EU-member countries are to convene in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss mandatory quotas for relocating asylum seekers.
The European Commission (EC) wants to motivate countries that oppose the quotas with a one-off contribution of €6,000 per refugee. Slovak Migration Office director Bernard Priecel estimates the costs per asylum seeker at €1,000-1,500 a month. The more refugees Slovakia accepted into the asylum process, the more the cost of each would decrease - even down to €500 per person.
Regarding the fact that asylum procedures in Slovakia take 90 days, and if we used the upper cost level, each asylum application would cost €4,500 - while the rest of the contribution would remain in Slovakia's coffers. EC representation spokesman Andrej Kralik assumes that Slovakia wouldn't keep the money but would use it for helping to integrate the asylum seekers.
The refugees' arrival in Europe also means a stimulus for certain companies. For example, Rikostav Container from Giraltovce (Presov region) has been granted a contract to built container housing units for the construction of a refugee camp in Cologne in Germany. Apart from €700,000 worth of earnings, the company also took on two dozen new workers.
The municipal kitchens in Opatovska Nova Ves (Banska Bystrica region) - which make food for migrants at a camp in the village - would also earn more.
The arrival of refugees in Slovakia worries people, mainly those with low incomes, but labour research director Martin Kahanec from the Central European Policy Institute thinks that such concerns are unfounded. "Surveys show that migrants create job opportunities," he said.
