Galek Files Motion with Prosecutor's Office about Electricity Price Increase

Bratislava, September 12 (TASR) - MP for the Opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party Karol Galek is filing a motion with the General Prosecutor's Office to investigate the increase in electricity prices, TASR learnt on Wednesday.
"This is for now the last instance that can save Slovaks from the scandalous decision of the Office for Regulation of Network Industries (URSO). The entire nation simply can't suffer because of the incompetence of political nominees," said Galek at a press conference on Wednesday.
"We want to prevent a situation in which people would have to club together to get an additional €18 million for electricity," said the MP, adding that URSO Chairman Lubomir Jahnatek decided to use this amount to increase subsidies for electricity production from domestic coal.
"For €18 million, all households in Prievidza district [Trencin region], where the Novaky power plant is located, could have electricity for free for the entire year," stated Galek. According to him, the URSO chief is acting in breach of his own regulation. "He [Jahnatek] explains this by an increase in emission prices. However, this is contrary to his own regulation that says what the price of emissions that enter the price of electricity produced from domestic coal, should be," added Galek.
Galek therefore asked whether something else could be behind it. "For example, an increase in the price of coal itself? It's a public secret that they don't manage to burn the coal mined and a solution could theoretically be an increase in the price," said the MP.
