Radicova: Euro Can't Be Maintained By Using Pyramid-Schemes Such As Bonds

(Slovak Radio, January 8, 'Sobotne Dialogy')

Even though the euro brings many advantages for the countries using it, the common European currency shouldn't be kept rolling at any cost, said Prime Minister Iveta Radicova on Saturday.
"And definitely not via pyramid-schemes, such as permanently issuing new bonds," she added, speaking on Slovak Radio's weekly politics debate show 'Sobotne Dialogy' (Saturday Dialogues) on Saturday.
According to Radicova, when it comes to maintaining the euro, the bottom line is whether and how the EU member states are capable of putting their economies back on their feet. "Which means - not via setting up stabilisation facilities and so on," she said.
Radicova warned that austerity measures and their impacts on living standards in individual member states also tend to translate into possible political instability.
Also, Radicova reconfirmed her negative stance towards the idea of setting up a fiscal union in Europe.
